Fifa 17: The Journey

Plot

"The Journey" is the story-based mode in the EA game FIFA 17. It depicts the rookie season of a teenage player named Alex Hunter (Tomiwa Edun) as he makes his way through the Premier League. There is a prologue section that shows a 10 year Alex Hunter competing in a youth city championship. The game goes to penalties and either Alex or his friend Gareth Walker (Lewis Reeves) scores the winning goal. We are also introduced to Alex's grandfather Jim Hunter (Fred Sunderland) who was a star striker in the 1960s, his supportive mother Catherine(Sharon Duncan-Brewster) and his father Harold--a guy with issues.

Fast forward seven years and we see Alex and Gareth going to a scouting combine where they need to finish in the top 10 in the prospects list to get a contract. You encounter a young professional player named Danny Williams (Chris Walters). Williams comes off as somewhat of a jerk. The person playing the game can direct Alex's responses to conversations. You can play Alex any way you like from humble to arrogant. The dialog choices work in a similar matter to those in the Mass Effect series.

At the end of the trials you get to choose what team you wish to play for. You also encounter your sports agent Michael Taylor (Ewert Jones). In a case of game play magic, the team happens to be the one Alex's grandfather played on. Gareth also joins the team. You meet the team's assistant manager Andrew Butler (Bobby Lawrenceson). He is the coach that you will interact with during the stay on the Premier League club. During the season, Alex plays in a number of drills to improve his abilities. The team goes to play three exhibition games in the U.S. During the third match, a top forward from your team is injured, changing the prospects. The regular season starts, with Alex coming off the bench. All of the games have the commentary team of Martin Tyler and Alan Smith (Themselves). After a couple of games, your team makes a big signing. Usually this is Harry Kane. As a result of this, Alex's playing time is reduced. Alex is then sent out on loan to a Second Division club (either Newcastle United, Norwich or Aston Villa). This ALWAYS happens-it is part of the plot When Alex gets to his new club, he re-meets Danny Williams. It turns out he is a pretty good guy after all and they become friends. He also meets the new club's assistant manager Dino. Meanwhile Gareth Walker stops replying to Alex's texts and gets arrogant. Alex continues to improve in practice and gets on the Starting 11 on his new team. He plays several games there. When Alex has a good performance, he sometimes gets an after-game press interview with reporter Karen Walston During the January transfer window, Gareth Walker jumps ship to the Premier League team's biggest rival for a big contract. Due to Alex's improving form, he is recalled to the parent club. Gareth's hostility increases as he makes a bunch of nasty Twitter messages. Alex continues to develop and the season continues. He should get three endorsement deals from Adidas.

Towards the end of the season, your team gets a visit from someone in ownership who exhorts the team to reach the goal for the season. Alex and Gareth will meet in the FA Cup final at the end of the season. After the game, Alex Hunter and his family are in his flat. Danny Williams is there and he and Alex are playing FIFA17 when the news come in that Alex has been selected for the England National Team
